13,6% growth for 2005 mobile market

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew 25 per cent year-over-year, to reach a record 209 million units during Q3 2005. In contrast, worldwide industry ASPs (Average Selling Price) fell 11 per cent annually during the quarter. Motorola reached its highest share position since 1999, while Sony Ericsson achieved its best performance since 2001.

Neil Mawston, Associate Director of the Wireless Device Strategies (WDS) service at Strategy Analytics, said, "A record 209 million mobile phones were shipped worldwide in Q3 2005. Following 566 million units during the first 9 months of the year, we expect the full-year total to surpass the 800 million level for the first time ever. Q4 will be yet another record quarter and the cell phone market is on track for $120 billion in total annual wholesale revenues by the end of this year."

An impressive 209 million handsets were shipped worldwide during Q3 2005. With demand growing in all regions, global handset shipments increased at a 25% annual rate in the third quarter of 2005, up from 16% in Q2 2005 and 10% in Q1 2005.Motorola was once again the star performer, as booming sales of the ultra-slim V3 Razr pushed it to a 19% worldwide share and its highest position since 1999. Nokia’s sequential market share fell slightly, despite sizeable gains in China. Samsung lost moderate share, as it continues to miss out on thriving low-end GSM segments in emerging markets. Sony Ericsson continued to rebound from a weak Q1, due to strong demand for high-end music phones such as the Walkman. Siemens gained share sequentially, as demand picked up in the EMEA region. Following 566M units globally in the first three quarters, Strategy Analytics has upgraded its forecast to 800M for the full-year 2005.
