Mobile applications, in general overpriced

Mobile applications make a mobile more fun, no doubt about that - but some of these little pieces of entertainment are these days overpriced, why is that?
I am one of those who agree anything above $20 is over the edge. If we compare the functionality of these applications with PC applications, there is obviously a BIG gap. Question is why some software developers try to position their small applications as big software houses that develop full-fledged application packages?

Worldmate from Mobimate is such a good example. I have heard Mobimate (the Israeli company that develops Worldmate) was funded by Sony Ericsson, to develop a cool application for the SE P800, the Worldmate. Worldmate turned out to be a success among P800 users and a best seller, according to Handango. In the early days, the formula of success was simple: nice price, useful features, and cool graphics. However, Mobimate handled success in a strange manner – read, started to take themselves too serious. Today, users are expected to pay $69 for an application that really cannot qualify as a productivity application (perhaps, general entertainment). If you compare Mobimate (professional edition) with Paint Shop Pro (or another mature application) in both functionality and price, you will perhaps not understand why Mobimate charges $69 compared with the $89 Jasc charges for their full-fledged application (which is not cheap). For a mobile phone that may cost (without operator subsidies) around $450 - which will likely include an inbuilt camera, imaging application, internet browser, PIM application, messaging suite and email client, mp3 player, video player, document viewer and editor, etc, etc, etc! – isn’t a little bizarre a firm like Mobimate asks you more almost 15% the value of your headset for ONE little application? Some things just do not make sense…

If you want to test mobile phone applications, you can go to
Handango - the biggest online store for mobile phone software. Do not forget to look at the top ten applications and get inspired. You can also look for trial applications at My-Symbian .

Why may I ask have you dedicated your blog to mobile phones?

Well because I am not that bright writing about celebrities – keep on failing their names, repeatedly. I write about the things I work with – which make me a rather tedious individual, unfortunately.

However, I found your blog is truly entertaining (well done!) – except the post about marzipan babies - if you have children, you know exactly what I mean.

Thank you for stopping by and best wishes.
